The season came to an end for the Blaine girls' soccer team, but coach Dan Steelquist said it was one that put the team back on the map.
The Borderites lost to Northwest 2-0 in a Class 1A Tri-District winner-to-state game Saturday, Nov. 3, at King's High School. Blaine finished the season 8-11-4 overall.
"We just seemed to run out of gas," Steelquist said in a phone interview. "The first half we dominated. We controlled a whole lot of the play; we just couldn't get it in their goal. The second half they were able to take a little more control of the game."
The teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime before Northwest took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. Northwest added its second goal in the 68th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
This was the furthest the Borderites have gone in girls' soccer in awhile, Steelquist said. The team will lose six seniors to graduation.
"I was proud of the girls for getting to this point," Steelquist said. "It's been really exciting to watch the team this year. They put us back on the map. It's a great launching point for the years to come."
