BELLINGHAM - Sehome football couldn't have picked a better way to say goodbye to its senior class.
In a game where offenses dominated, the Mariners (4-6), led by senior running back Malik Williams, defeated winless Sammamish 62-29 on Friday, Nov. 2, at Civic Stadium.
And in his last game as a Sehome football player, Williams showed the younger players what will be expected of them in the years to come. Williams finished the game rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns on four carries (32.5 yards per carry), while adding a late 54-yard touchdown reception from senior quarterback Austin Rapp.
But Williams, in genuine form, took little credit for the team's strong play.
"It was a real team effort tonight," Williams said. "The future looks bright for the teams."
Rapp, who also played in his final game as a Mariner, threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns.
Sehome coach Bob Norvell said after the game that he wished he had a few more games with his talented group of seniors.
"They were everything I wanted," Norvell said. "They're so talented - they have no idea how good they really are."
Although Sehome was eliminated from playoff contention last week, the win was anything but meaningless. The convincing victory was the Mariners' fourth of the season, which is the most wins the team has gotten since 2008.
And the future only looks brighter with talents like junior running back/wide receiver Daniel Ziegler returning for Novell's second season as Sehome's coach. Ziegler finished the game against Sammamish with 151 yards rushing and two touchdowns on three carries, including a 93-yard touchdown that nearly saw him dropped for a safety as he crossed along the backline. He also had 51 yards receiving and a touchdown on two receptions.
"Ziegler is real special," Novell said. "(I think) he's proved himself."
Sehome racked up 643 yards of total offense in the win over the Totems, including 401 rushing yards on 26 carries (15.4 yards per carry).
