ANACORTES - The first night of the Class 2A Northwest District girls' swimming preliminaries had the usual top qualifiers from Sehome, Squalicum and Bellingham, but this time there's a new face around.

With Lake Washington in the district now, Sehome coach Don Helling sees the finals Saturday, Nov. 3, coming down to the wire with the Mariners, Storm and the newcomers from Lake Washington.

Sehome won last year's district team title and the Class 2A team state title.

"It looks like Lake Washington is really strong," Helling said in a phone interview. "Squalicum is right there and we are right behind. Anything can happen. It will be very interesting to see tomorrow."

Highlighting Sehome's day on Friday, Nov. 2, was Shirley Lam who is seeded first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 23.75 seconds and a state-qualifying time of 1:05.85 in the 100 backstroke, good for a fifth seed.

There were several local swimmers seeded high in each event after the preliminaries. Those with No. 1 seeds after prelims were Bellingham's Maddiee Gillman in the 200 freestyle (1:59.81), Lam in the 200 individual medley, Squalicum's Olivia Nielsen in the 100 butterfly (1:02.62) and Bellingham's Maddiee Gillman in the 500 freestyle (5:22.67).

The Sehome and Squalicum relay teams each had times in the top four places for all three relays.

The top 12 times in each event advanced to Saturday's finals.

"It should be a lot of fun and lot of fast races," Helling said. "Our district is always competitive."
