Ferndale girls' soccer knocked out of districts with 1-0 loss

Published: November 2, 2012

The Ferndale girls' soccer team's season ended sooner than it would have liked after its 1-0 loss to Shorecrest in the consolation semifinals of the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 1, in Shoreline.

"We had opportunities to put it in the net but just couldn't do it," Ferndale coach Joe Gonzalez said in a phone interview. "They had a deeper bench and fresher legs and that's where it broke down. It was an epic battle with both teams playing really hard; they just deserved to win today."

Shorecrest scored its goal in the 60th minute on a shot from Sophia Flohr. Ferndale outshot its opponents 18-15 in the loss.

Ferndale was led by goalkeeper Vernelle Johnson with nine saves in the effort.

"She really kept us in the game and had all-star saves," Gonzalez said. "It was a great way to end her high school career. She played her best game ever tonight. But lots of girls had outstanding games and everybody absolutely laid everything on the field."

With the loss, the Golden Eagles were knocked out of the district tournament and their season has ended. The team finished 8-7-3, 7-3-2 NWC.
