FERNDALE - A Ferndale woman ripped her boyfriend's tracheal tube from his throat, then charged at a cop while armed with two knives on Halloween, according to police.
Dawn E. Toney, 40, was arguing with her 58-year-old boyfriend about relationship problems at about 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in their apartment in the 2000 block of Washington Street. She punched him before pulling the artificial breathing tube from his throat with her bare fingers, said Ferndale Police Lt. Bill Hatchett.
Police found the victim - with blood on his mouth and marks on his face - standing outside. He could breathe on his own. Toney was yelling inside. The front door of the first-floor apartment was locked. She refused to open it, Hatchett said, so the officer went around back, where he found an open sliding-glass door.
When Toney saw him, she raised two large kitchen knives to about the height of her shoulders and yelled, "I'm going to kill you!" according to police. She rushed at the officer, Hatchett said, so he slid the glass door shut and backed off until another officer showed up at the back of the apartment.
Toney opened the door and refused to put down the knives, then started cutting one of her wrists, police said. She was shot with a Taser and arrested.
Police don't think Toney was drunk or under the influence of drugs.
Toney's live-in boyfriend was treated at the home and declined a ride to St. Joseph hospital. Toney was taken to the hospital for her bleeding wrist. She was booked into Whatcom County Jail less than an hour later on suspicion of second-degree assault, fourth-degree domestic violence assault and an unrelated DUI warrant.
