Local teams stay put in final AP poll

Published: November 1, 2012

There wasn't any movement for Whatcom County teams in the final Associated Press State High School Football Poll released on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

After a 49-7 win over Squalicum, Lynden (8-1) received a pair of first-place votes and remained at No. 2 in Class 2A, eight points behind top-ranked Othello, which received 10 first-place nods. Tumwater is the new No. 3 behind the Lions, after Lakewood lost to King's - the No. 1 team in Class 1A.

The Lions host Sultan at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in the Class 2A Northwest District Playoffs with a trip to the state playoffs on the line.

Mount Baker (8-1) stayed at No. 8 in the 1A poll after a 30-8, NWC 1A-clinching win over Meridian last week. The Mountaineers have already locked up a trip to state and await the Southwest District No. 3 seed in the first round on Nov. 10 or 11.

Ferndale (8-1) remained at No. 7 in Class 3A after a 55-13 win at Anacortes last week. Bellevue was the unanimous No. 1 in the classification. The Golden Eagles host Hazen at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Civic Stadium in the 3A crossover playoffs for a trip to the state playoffs, which would likely land them in a first-round showdown with Bellevue.

Lummi (8-2) stuck at No. 4 in the Class 1B poll after its national record-tying 128-68 victory over Tulalip last week. Liberty Christian remained No. 1 in the poll. The Blackhawks host Quilcene at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in the tri-district playoffs. A win would land Lummi in the state playoffs in two weeks, while a loss would send them to a win-or-go-home game in the quad-district playoffs next week.

Skyline was a unanimous No. 1 in Class 4A, while Morton/White Pass was undisputed top pick in 2B.
