Ferndale girls' soccer win 1-0 in consolation bracket

Published: October 31, 2012

The Ferndale girls' soccer team lived to play another game after defeating Marysville-Getchell 1-0 in the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Mount Vernon.

The Eagles accomplished their season goal of winning a game in districts, something the team has not done in the school's history according to Ferndale coach Joe Gonzalez.

"They made history and I am proud of them," Gonzalez said in a phone interview. "Their goal that they wrote down was to win a game in the playoffs. Now they need to reset their goals; it's exciting."

Dasia Washington scored the lone goal in the 17th minute on a pass from Kelli Bannerman.

"Dasia really held her ground out there really well," Gonzalez said. "She cut across the middle and slotted it far post and beat everybody. But the whole team played 80 minutes and when that happens it works really well."

Vernelle Johnson kept the shutout for the Golden Eagles.

"It was exciting for Vernelle to get the shutout in the playoffs," Gonzalez said. "Every player really stood out tonight and did their job."

Ferndale advances to play the loser of the Everett/Shoreline match on Thursday, Nov. 1, with the loser being knocked out of the tournament.
