Blaine girls' soccer advances in tri-district play with 2-1 win

Published: October 31, 2012

The Blaine girls' soccer team advanced to the second round of the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament with a 2-1 win over Eatonville on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Orting.

"We came out and knew they had some pretty serious speed up front and had to adjust to that," Blaine coach Dan Steelquist said in a phone interview. "One of their players had 26 goals this season and we knew we needed to deal with her. Our defenders played composed the entire game and Anna Hewitt was phenomenal in goal."

Blaine scored first in the 14th minute when Hope Wilkett scored by placing it far post.

Blaine's second goal came in the 37th minute when Olivia Olason scored on a penalty kick.

"It really wasn't that physical, even with the three penalties," Steelquist said. "It was just two teams wanting to stay alive in the playoffs. We had to keep our composure and stay focused. There wasn't a time that we could let up."

Anna Hewitt saved Eatonville's first penalty attempt in the first half.

Blaine advances to the next round of the tournament and will face the winner of Meridian/Cedar park Christian in a winner-to-state game on Thursday, Nov. 1.
