The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross has sent two volunteers to New York to help with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
A nurse from Nooksack and one shelter worker from Bellingham were sent this past weekend.
They will help as needed during the next three weeks, according to a news release from the local chapter.
The American Red Cross opened more than 100 shelters in several states over the weekend, and more will be opened as the storm moves closer.
The organization has sent more than 1,300 disaster workers to the region and 160 emergency response vehicles, as well as shipped hundreds of thousands of meals.
