Blaine's Tom Bradley finished ahead of Mount Baker's Dillon Quintana to take first place at the Class 1A Boys' Tri-District Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27, at American Lake Golf Course in Tacoma.
Bradley's time of 16 minutes, 2.1 seconds was five seconds ahead of second-place Quintana (16:07.5), who clocked in well ahead of the third-place time.
The top five teams advanced to the Class 1A Boys' State Championships with Lynden Christian finishing second, Meridian third and Blaine fifth. Charles Wright Academy came in first place as a team.
The top 25 individuals advanced to state with the Lyncs leading the way with four: Cody Velthuizen in eighth, Weston Whitener (16th), Hunter Weinert (23rd) and Jon Wiley (25th). Meridian qualified two runners to state (Kelby Todd in ninth and Collin Magnusson in 10th), Blaine qualified two runners to state (Bradley and Eddie Fontes in 11th) and Mount Baker qualified two runners to state (Quintana and Shelby Miles in 14th).
Though Meridian's Davis Phillips, who finished 30th, barely missed out on a state berth, he ran an incredible race given his unlucky set of circumstances.
Trojans' coach Mike Holz said Phillips lost one of his shoes 150 meters into the race and ran three miles on one bare foot through gravel, up and down hills and over tree roots.
"It was amazing the toughness he showed today," Holz said in a phone interview. "His foot was bleeding after the race, and his heel was killing him."
The Class 1A Boys' State Championships will be Saturday, Nov. 3, at Pasco.
