BELLINGHAM - Sehome's Class 2A Northwest District Tournament opening-round match against Cedarcrest began with an unsettling all too familiar feeling.
Nearly a year ago Cedarcrest's Karli White stunned the Mariners with a late game-winning goal during the Class 2A State quarterfinals, ending Sehome's season.
Mariners' senior Teya Mischaikov made it clear: Sehome was out for revenge.
"Yeah, there really was," said Mischaikov when asked if Sehome had extra incentive to beat Cedarcrest. "We were crushed last year."
White and the Red Wolves appeared poised to play spoiler once more, but after Cedarcrest's speedy sophomore scored her second goal of the game in the second half to give the Cascade Conference's No. 3 seed a 2-1 advantage, Sehome went to work.
After being shut out in the first half, the Mariners scored four goals in a 10-minute span to earn a 5-2 come-from-behind win Saturday, Oct. 27, at a rainy Civic Stadium.
"To win today felt really good," Mischaikov said. "We were able to get some redemption."
White's goal in the 13th minute marked only the second time Sehome has trailed this year, and the Mariners' first-half play left coach Andria Fountain wondering what happened to her undefeated, district tournament No. 1-seeded Mariners.
"Obviously in the first half we didn't play our strongest half," Fountain said. "I think there were a little bit of nerves. I'm happy we did stuff we talked about at halftime and rebounded. I was joking and told them, 'OK, finally, (50) minutes into the game my team shows up.' I was happy with the end result."
Following a first half of uninspired long shot attempts on goal, Fountain remembered 10 minutes into the second why her side won a Northwest Conference title.
Trailing 1-0, Sehome forward Hanna Tarleton equalized in the 49th minute to begin the Mariners' scoring barrage. Tarleton was the recipient of a scramble for the ball in the heart of Cedarcrest's 18-yard box. She got a clean look from 12 yards out and buried a shot past Red Wolves' keeper Bailey Parish.
Two minutes later, White scored to put Cedarcrest back on top.
The lead was short lived, though.
Mariners' leading goal scorer, Emily Webster, headed home a corner kick off the foot of Tarleton in the 54th minute. Three minutes later, she added her second score.
Webster found an open shooting lane 30 yards from goal and cracked a speeding shot past Parish into the upper left-hand corner of the net to put Sehome ahead 3-2.
Two minutes after, Mischaikov put her name in the scoring column. She struck a shot from the top of the 18-yard box off a clever back-heel pass from Webster.
"Earlier in the game we did the same thing, and I completely shanked it," Mischaikov said. "I was like, 'OK, Web, this time I promise I'll score,' and so I got the perfect opportunity, took a little touch and just shot, and it worked."
The score gave the Mariners a two-goal advantage and capped a four-goal, 10-minute spurt.
"I think we got that first goal, and it fired us up and we just kept attacking," Mischaikov said. "We went at their defenders and didn't let up."
Sehome's defense held Cedarcrest to one true shot on goal in the second half, as defenders Alli Umbaugh, Emily Russell and Hannah Mankle helped shut down the Red Wolves' forwards.
Nikki Thon added a final goal for the Mariners in the 75th minute. The senior midfielder/defender jumped for a Tarleton corner and headed a shot past Parish from eight yards out.
Sehome put 12 shots on frame, and Cedarcrest challenged Mariners keeper Rachel Albert only five times.
The win advances Sehome to the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, where it faces Granite Falls in a winner-to-state game Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Civic Stadium. Cedarcest plays Bellingham in the consolation bracket also on Tuesday.
"We just need to focus on what we are capable of doing," Fountain said. "We just try to make everyone believe in themselves and their teammates."
