Bellingham falls to Granite Falls in overtime in district soccer

Published: October 28, 2012

Despite controlling much of the match, the Bellingham girls' soccer team came up on the wrong end of a Class 2A Northwest District game Saturday, Oct. 27, at Granite Falls.

The Red Raiders lost to Granite Falls 2-1 in overtime to fall to 9-7-1. Bellingham will play Cedarcrest on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in a loser-out game.

Larkyn Nelson scored the game's first goal in the 14th minute to give Bellingham a 1-0 lead. Granite Falls tied the game at 1-1 in the 26th minute and the two teams stayed tied through regulation.

In the fourth minute of overtime Granite Falls' Courteney Loesche scored on a header for the game-winner. It was one of just six shots on goal for Granite Falls compared to 13 for Bellingham.

"The one chance they had after halftime they scored," Bellingham coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "There was no way (Bellingham goalie Hannah Jacobus) could get to it."

Wright was pleased with his team's effort despite the defeat.

"I was really proud of how we played with their physicality," Wright said. "We had the ball for almost the entire second half. They should be proud of how they played."
