If you're looking for Halloween events other than collecting candy around the neighborhood or turning off the lights and eating it all yourself, here are some options for Wednesday, Oct. 31. All of them are free, unless otherwise noted.
Downtown Trick or Treat: Downtown Bellingham, 3 to 5 p.m. Bellingham's biggest Halloween event with more than 100 downtown merchants opening their doors for kids in costume and their families. Last year, more than 1,000 participants filled their bags with candy, coupons and other goodies.
Fairhaven Trick or Treat: Fairhaven District, 3 to 6 p.m. Dozens of Fairhaven businesses welcome children in costume for trick-or-treating in the historic district. Bring your treat bag to collect your goodies.
Halloween stories with the Storytellers Guild: Village Books, 1200 11th St., Fairhaven. Ghoulish tales told from 4 to 6 p.m. during the Fairhaven Trick or Treat.
Trick or Treat photos: Herald Building, 1155 N. State St. Drop by from 3 to 5 p.m. during the downtown Trick or Treat to have costumed children's photos taken by Bellingham Herald staff photographers. Photos will put in online galleries at BellinghamFamilies.com and available for sale. In partnership with Allied Arts.
Chuckanut celebrates Halloween: Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen, 601 W. Holly St., 3 p.m. on. Trick or treat during downtown event until 5 p.m. Costume contest at 9 p.m. Adults in costume get pints of beer for $3.50.
Boo! at Bloedel Carnival: Bloedel Donovan Community Building, 4 to 6 p.m. Candy-free carnival for preschool children through second grade. Game booths include zombie bowling and worms on a string. Prizes and treats for all. Children and parents encouraged to wear costumes; face painting offered to complete your look. Bring a container to collect prizes. Cost: $3 per child, adults free.
Thrillingham: Group performances of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" dance at 7:30 p.m. in Fairhaven and 9:30 p.m. at Maritime Heritage Park. Come to watch the people who have been rehearsing for the annual tradition for the past several weeks.
Scream Fair Halloween: Henry Jansen Building, Northwest Washington Fair & Event Center, Lynden, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Features scary walk-though haunted houses with various themes. Tickets are $13, or $20 for a VIP pass to skip the line. Details: screamfair.com.
"Hellingham of the Dead": Upfront Theatre, 1208 Bay St., Bellingham, 8 p.m. "Hellingham of the Dead" is the survival story of a small town at the onset of a zombie apocalypse. Watch as the townsfolk fight to survive and avoid becoming zombies themselves, one at a time. Price: $15. Tickets at theupfront.com.
Idiom's Halloween spectacular: Blue Horse Gallery, 301 W. Holly St., Bellingham, 8 p.m. Music by Bar Tabac and featuring original performances of Halloween songs, stories, plays and poems. Costume and haiku contests, dessert bar, silent auction. Tickets, $15, at idiomtheater.com or the door.
The Listers Halloween celebration: Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro, 1107 Railroad Ave., Bellingham, 9 a.m. to midnight. Celebrate with live music by the Listers; costumes welcome. Cover: $5, for people 21 and older.
