Ferndale, Blaine drop in polls after last week's losses

Published: October 25, 2012

After their Week 8 losses to ranked opponents, Ferndale fell three places to No. 7 in Class 3A and Blaine tumbled out of the 1A top 10 in the latest Associated Press Washington State High School Football Poll.

The polls are selected by a statewide panel of sports writers and editors.

Ferndale (7-1), which entered Week 8 ranked No. 4, suffered a 49-14 loss at Lynden last week and now finds itself ranked No. 7 behind unanimous No. 1 Bellevue in the 3A ranks. The Golden Eagles wrap up their regular season on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Anacortes.

Lynden, meanwhile, remained at No. 2 in the 2A poll, but closed the gap on top-ranked Othello a little. The Lions received two of 13 first-place votes, opening up their advantage over No. 3 Lakewood. Othello received the other 11 first-place nods.

Lynden (7-1), which has already wrapped up the Northwest Conference title and a top seed into the district playoffs, finishes off its regular season on Thursday against Squalicum at Civic Stadium.

A 38-14 win by Mount Baker (7-1) not only boosted the Mountaineers two spots to No. 8 in the 1A poll, it knocked Blaine (6-2) out of the top 10. The Borderites still received 13 points, ranking them two behind No. 10 Cascade Christian. King's was a unanimous No. 1 in the classification.

Mount Baker will attempt to wrap up the NWC 1A title and an automatic berth to the state playoffs on Thursday when it hosts Meridian, while Blaine will try to secure a postseason spot when it travels to Nooksack Valley on Thursday.

Lummi (7-2) moved up one spot to No. 4 in the 1B poll after its 50-0 win at Lopez. Liberty Christian continued to be the top team in the classification with six first-place votes, while second-place Neah Bay received two. The Blackhawks host Tulalip on Thursday in their regular-season finale.

Skyline (Class 4A) and Morton White Pass (2B) were unanimous No. 1 selections in their respective classifications.
