Lynden Christian defeats Coupeville 6-0 to advance to district semis

Published: October 25, 2012

The Lynden Christian girls' soccer team defeated Coupeville 6-0 in the first round of the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Lynden.

"I thought the girls played really well, especially in the second half," Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "Coupeville gave a real burst of energy in the first part of the second half and we responded well. The finishing really came for us in the second half."

Haley Hollander scored the first goal for the Lyncs in the 10th minute off a corner from Sara Dougan.

"Haley put together some really nice opportunities and defended really well against Coupeville's best central midfielder," De Ruyter said. "Not bad for a freshman playing against a senior."

Lexi Vander Griend scored the next two goals for Lynden Christian and the Lyncs got two more from Sierra De Vries. Hollander scored the final goal for Lynden Christian in the 75th minute.

"We did a really good job of wearing them down possession-wise," De Ruyter said. "I thought our team's defense did a great job too. Especially because we were missing two starters."

Lynden Christian will host Blaine on Friday, Oct. 24, in the second round.
