Encourages opinions on coal proposal

Published: October 23, 2012

Several recent letters seem to cheerlead a thoughtless enthusiasm for the proposed coal terminal. Can one really believe that this terminal "will lead this county into a vibrant and strong future"? What does this even mean?

One letter objects to "powerful outside influences" opposed to the terminal, forgetting that the most powerful influences by far are the corporations that simply hope to use this community for their own profit.

Another letter from a veteran coal train engineer claims that there is no coal dust issue. This is probably true for the driver in the engine, but not for the rest of us.

A third letter claims that SSA Marine is committed to a "thorough environmental study." Yes, they are committed to it only because they cannot legally escape it, having attempted to severely restrict it.

Attend the first public hearing on Oct. 27 and voice more thoughtful opinions.
