Several years ago, an initiative to include fluoride into Bellingham's water supply was voted down. The rationale behind the fluoride was to provide underserved people (especially children) with accessible dental hygiene. Bellingham citizens didn't support the addition of fluoride into their water I believe because there wasn't sufficient evidence to prove that fluoride doesn't pose a systemic health risk to humans. Although I believe everyone in America should have access to medical and dental care, I agree that the right decision was to err on the side of caution at least until fluoride could be studied more. Additionally, I believe that Bellingham citizens should not support the use of motorboats on Lake Whatcom until we have evidence that shows motorboat operation and unburned gasoline in our drinking water source do not contribute a statistically significant risk to humans. We as humans are composed mostly of water and therefore should supply ourselves with the healthiest water possible. I hope the citizens of Bellingham can open a discourse to try to improve the quality of our drinking water and environment.
