FISHING: Try new gear at chum salmon fishing event

Published: October 21, 2012

The Gig Harbor Fly Shop will host its annual Chum Salmon Fish Out on Saturday.

The event will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Belfair State Park.

Participants will have the chance to try the latest fly-fishing rods and lines from Rajeff Sports.

If you are struggling with your casting distance, spooking fish on your presentation casts or feel you are not getting all the performance from your rod, you should consider attending this event, said Blake Merwin, shop owner.

This will be a chance to try different rod and line combinations and spend time with experts Tim Rajeff and Eric Neufeld.

There will be four sessions where the two pros will explain the latest rod and line technologies and how the right rod and right line will make your time on the water more productive.

The schedule of sessions is:

10:30 a.m.: The anatomy of a trout rod

11:45 a.m.: How a fly line changes the performance of your fly rod

1 p.m.: Casting contest with prizes

2:30 p.m.: How to tweak your gear and casting style to achieve more distance

3:45 p.m.: The anatomy of a saltwater rod

There also will be a potluck barbecue. Bring something to grill and a side dish to share. And bring your own gear and fish for chum salmon.
