Baisden scores game-winner for Mountaineers

Published: October 21, 2012

Mount Baker's Jessa Baisden scored a game-winning goal in the 76th minute to help the Mountaineers earn a 1-0 regular season-ending win against Meridian in a Northwest Conference girls' soccer game Saturday, Oct. 20, at Mount Baker High School.

Baisden's goal came on a free kick, and Baker coach Brenda Ellis said the late scored earned the Mountaineers a bit of redemption for the many times they have lost late this season.

"It was our senior game, so it was really nice for the girls to get the win," Ellis said in a phone interview. "Scoring at the end has happened so much to us so many times. We fought hard. Meridian had some nice shots on goal."

Freshman keeper Emily Brandland, who has filled in for Jamie Johnson since she got injured early in the year, posted a shutout and made 12 saves.

Mount Baker and Meridian will play again in the first round of the Class 1A District Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 24. A time and location have not been determined.
