SSC, Blue Skies for Children win Bellingham chamber awards

A local garbage and recycling company and a children's nonprofit agency have won awards from the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Sanitary Service Company was awarded the 2012 Green Business of the Year while Blue Skies for Children was selected as the 2012 Non-Profit Business of the Year. SSC serves more than 45,000 residential and commercial customers in Whatcom County, while Blue Skies focuses on raising hope and self-esteem for homeless, low-income and foster children.

The awards were announced ahead of the chamber's 8th Annual Awards Banquet, which will take place Dec. 5 at the Best Western Lakeway Inn.

The chamber also announced its nominees two other awards. The nominees for Small Business of the Year are Alicia's Bridal, Bellingham Bells, Data Link West and Favinger Plumbing.

The nominees for Large Business of the Year are Airporter Shuttle, Express Employment Professionals, Ram Construction, Saturna Capital and VSH Certified Public Accountants.

Proceeds of the banquet benefit Blue Skies for Children and the Whatcom Chamber Foundation.
