No. 14 WWU wins fifth straight

Holding the opposition to a .031 hitting percentage, Western Washington University swept Simon Fraser University, 25-15, 25-17, 25-13, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday night at West Gymnasium on the SFU campus.

The Vikings, ranked No. 14 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll, upped their overall record to 15-2 and are tied for first-place in the GNAC standings at 8-1 with Central Washington.

It was the fifth straight win for WWU, all of them sweeps. Simon Fraser dropped to 3-13 overall and is winless in nine GNAC matches.

Middle blocker Kayla Erickson led WWU with a match-high 11 kills. She hit .435 with just one error in 23 attempts. Erickson also tied for match-high honors in blocks with setter Laurie Yearout, each having five. Yearout also had 32 assists.

Emily Boerger added eight kills and four blocks for the Vikings, and outside hitter Marlayna Geary had seven kills and eight digs.

WWU libero Samantha Hutchinson tied for match-best honors in digs with 16, and Emily Cotter had 12.

WWU plays host to No.22-rated Central at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at Sam Carver Gymnasium on WWU's campus.
