LUMMI - Playing their second game in three days didn't affect the Lummi Blackhawks on Friday, Oct. 12, as Deion Hoskins took the first play from scrimmage on a pitch to the left side and ran it 53 yards down the sideline for a touchdown.
It was the first of three scores for Hoskins as he and his teammates rolled out a 73-18 win over the visiting Clallam Bay Bruins.
Six different players scored touchdowns for Lummi, and eleven players either ran the ball or made catches for 637 offensive yards. The Blackhawks ran just seven plays in the first quarter, but five resulted in touchdowns. The score after one quarter was 33-0.
Two days ago Lummi won on the road with a 71-28 win over Muckleshoot.
"We were fortunate the first game wasn't a real physical game so we didn't get beat up," coach Jim Sandusky said.
He scheduled the games that way, he said, because "I thought it would be a good chance for us (different players) to get in and get some more playing time."
"It was pretty great," said Devin Cooper, a sophomore running back. "A lot of fun, a lot of fun. It was a blast."
Cooper describes himself as more of a runner who has been working on his receiving skills this season. It didn't stop him from breaking into the open for an 81-yard touchdown run late in the game. He had 92 on the night on four carries to lead the team.
Two quarterbacks, Logan Toby and Dimitri Sampson, combined for 315 yards passing, completing seven of eight passes. The seven completions went to six separate receivers. Five were good for touchdowns.
After the first half Clallam Bay solved the Blackhawks defense to establish some credibility on the ground. The Bruins picked up 267 yards rushing on 37 carries but could manage only 32 yards passing. As time ran out on Clallam Bay, Lummi took its second decisive victory in three days.
