Freshamn goalie leads Lyncs past Lions

Published: October 10, 2012

Freshman goalkeeper Karibeth Engelsma stepped in and helped the Lynden girls' soccer team shut out Lynden Christian 2-0 in Northwest Conference action Tuesday, Oct. 9.

The win improved the Lyncs to 6-4-1, 4-4-0 NWC while the Lions dropped to 2-8-2, 0-6-2 NWC.

Engelsma played due to an injury to Lynden Christian's regular goalie and had four saves.

"She did an absolute amazing job in her first varsity match," Lyncs coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview.

Courtney Hollander scored Lynden Christian's first goal in the 15th minute and Sally Vlas added a goal for the Lyncs in the 54th minute.

"We really possessed the ball well," De Ruyter said. "Our ability to use the whole field ... really created problems for Lynden."
