Armed man taken into custody by Bellingham police after making threats

BELLINGHAM - Police arrested an armed man without incident late Monday night after he allegedly made suicide threats near the Western Washington University campus.

No shots were fired, said WWU officials, who sent out an email alert late Monday to students, faculty and staff.

Bellingham and university police cordoned off an area at South Samish Way and Bill McDonald Parkway, where negotiators reportedly were talking with an armed man in a vehicle. University police Chief Randy Stegmeier said he believed that a man in his 50s had called 911 to make a suicide threat.

Stegmeier says the email alert was sent because the area is close to campus and near a restaurant and shopping center that students frequent.
