- Linda Starkenburg of Lynden was selected as 2012-13 board president of Lighthouse Mission. She has served on the board since 2009 and succeeds Dave Buys, who will become vice-president. Arlis Bosman was selected board secretary and Gary Haveman was selected board treasurer.
Longtime board members Ralph Lautenbach and Frank Vogel were recognized for their decades of volunteer service at the mission, and outgoing board treasurer John Barry was recognized for his service as well.
- Bellingham native Nathan Boll received two scholarships at University of Montana Western: a $1,500 Montana Space Grant Consortium Space Grant Scholarship and a $2,500 Great Lakes Loan Servicing Center Science Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Scholarship.
Both are on top of the $3,000 Carl & Martha Davis Scholarship that Boll received for the 2012-13 academic year through the UMW Foundation.
A senior mathematics major, Boll spent the 2012 summer as an intern at the National Aeronautic and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Lab. He plans to pursue a doctorate in astrophysics.
- Two students of architecture received scholarships from the American Institute of Architects, Northwest Washington Chapter: Glen Marquardt of Bellingham, a junior at the University of California, Berkeley; and Haley Grunhurd of Ferndale, a junior at Washington State University.
