LYNDEN - Getting the win was all that was on the mind of Mount Baker running back Jake Schleimer as he ran for 143 yards and three touchdowns as Mount Baker won 43-26 at Lynden Christian in a Northwest Conference Class 1A game on Friday, Oct. 5.

"He is our guy that we lean on," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said. "He has put a lot of work in during the offseason and we depend on him a lot. He's a tough, physical runner but he's humble and works hard."

Schleimer scored a 1-yard touchdown to begin the scoring in the first quarter.

Lynden Christian quickly responded with a 7-yard Levi Vander Yacht reception, but that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game.

The Mountaineers scored 24 unanswered points and took a 31-6 lead into halftime.

"We had too many mistakes - interceptions and fumbles and penalties and even letting them return a punt for a touchdown," Lynden Christian coach Galen Kaemingk said. "We didn't play with much life in the first half. In the second we did and when we watch the tape they will see it was right there for them."

Lynden Christian began calling more aggressive plays, including a second-half onside kickoff that would be recovered and a hook-and-ladder that went for 35 yards.

"They had some trick plays and we had to deal with it. We just need to make sure that we do what we're supposed to do. Not do someone else's job, but ours," Lepper said. "We did a great job offensively and Lynden Christian made it hard for us by flooding the box."

Schleimer scored his second touchdown in the third quarter to make the score 37-6. He scored his final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Lyncs scored their second touchdown in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard reception by Truman Van Dalen. They recovered their second onside kick and scored again a little more than two minutes later on a 6-yard run by Josh Friberg.

"Part of the process is for them to believe in themselves, to realize that they can do it," Kaemingk said. "It takes time. I'm hoping that we can build off of our second half and be able to go out and play our game."
