The Ferndale girls' soccer team came back twice in its 3-2 victory over Lynden Christian in a Northwest Conference match on Thursday, Oct. 4, in Ferndale.
"It was definitely a battle, but we managed to come out on top," Ferndale coach Joe Gonzalez said in a phone interview. "At half we were down 1-0 and I talked about how this might happen in district or state play and how they respond today will teach them how to respond in a big game like that."
Courtney Hollander scored first for the Lyncs in the 16th minute, the only goal in the first half.
Ferndale scored one minute after halftime with a goal by Jillian Monson, assisted by Shelby Slaughter.
"That was probably the best goal all year," Gonzalez said. "It was top notch."
Lynden Christian responded two minutes later with a goal from Sara Dougan.
Jordin Bartel then scored twice for the Golden Eagles.
"We took a step forward today," Gonzalez said. "Tina Slaughter was the player of the game. She won every ball in the air and was able to push the ball back into their end."
Ferndale improved to 5-4-2, 5-2-1 NWC and will play at Meridian on Tuesday, Oct. 9, while Lynden Christian (5-4-1, 3-4-0 NWC) will host Lynden.
