In spite of a 41-0 victory over Sehome last week, the Lynden football team dropped one spot in the Associated Press' Class 2A Washington state prep football poll this week.
Unbeaten Lakewood, which beat South Whidbey 42-13, got enough votes from a statewide panel of sports writers and editors to skip over the Lions, even though Lynden got one first-place vote. Othello remained atop the poll, as it received the remaining 12 first-place votes following a 43-14 victory over Ephrata last week.
Lynden (4-1) hosts Bellingham at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5.
No other Northwest Conference teams appeared in the Class 2A poll, or the 3A poll, despite a 5-0 record by Ferndale, which beat Squalicum 41-14 last week and travels to Sedro-Woolley on Friday.
In fact, Blaine is the only other NWC team in the poll, as the Borderites held steady at No. 7 in the Class 1A rankings after a 30-0 victory over Lynden Christian. The Borderites (4-1) travel to Friday Harbor on Friday.
King's, which handed Lynden its only loss, remains atop the Class 1A poll after a 45-6 win over Sultan.
Lummi (3-2) dropped only one spot to No. 4 in the Class 1B rankings after a 48-28 loss to No. 2 Neah Bay last week. The Red Devils received three of eight first-place votes, but it wasn't enough to unseat Liberty Christian atop the poll.
The Blackhawks, meanwhile, have another stiff challenge this week, when they travel Saturday to Joyce to face No. 8 Crescent.
Skyline and Bellevue remained unanimous top picks in Class 4A and Class 3A polls, respectively, while Morton/White Pass topped the Class 2B rankings.
