Senior Sarah Finger scored a pair of goals to boost the Mount Baker girls' soccer team to its first Northwest Conference victory, 2-1, over Lynden on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
"Call it the Finger Zinger," Mountaineers coach Brenda Ellis joked. "Sarah has got a real nice touch - she's crafty with the ball, and she's got some moxy. A lot of times, we try to get the ball in Sarah's area and let her work her magic."
Jessa Baisden was the first to do just that on an indirect kick in the 25th minute. Twenty minutes later, Nicole Boardman fed Finger on a "beautiful" crossing pass, Ellis said, and Finger converted for her second goal.
"It's good to get this win," Ellis said. "It's a good boost for the girls. They've been playing and working so hard, it's good to see good things happen for them."
Jayme Smits scored Lynden's lone goal in the 50th minute.
Mount Baker (3-5-2, 1-4-1 NWC) next travels to Burlington-Edison on Thursday, Oct. 4, while Lynden (2-7-2, 0-5-2) is next at Lynden Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
