Key win at singles lifts Lynden past Ferndale in boys' tennis

The Lynden and Ferndale boys' tennis match came down to the end and Brian Groves helped clinch a win for the Lions on Monday, Oct. 1, at Lynden.

Groves' victory at No. 3 singles gave the Lions win No. 4 in a 4-3 Northwest Conference victory over Ferndale. He win improved the Lions to 6-5, 6-5 NWC.

"It came down to the wire," Lynden coach Trey Ballard said in a phone interview.

The Lions' lone win at singles came from Groves who won 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.

"He came back and played a really smart second and third set," Ballard said. "He's looking like he's coming around now and clinched the victory for the team."

Lynden swept the doubles matches. Luke Reardon and Toby Dalla Santa won at No. 1 doubles, Jay Roper and Mikal Olson won at No. 2 and Trevor Dalla Santa and Brock Benner won at No. 3.

Ferndale (0-11, 0-11 NWC) had all its wins at singles. Trevor Koehn won at No. 1, Taylor Walton won at No. 2 and Nate Fallis won at No. 4. in singles.

Lynden next plays at NWC-leading Sehome on Wednesday, Oct. 3, while Ferndale travels to play Bellingham on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
