LUMMI - What began as one of the greatest offensive displays in Lummi's proud football history wound up one of the Blackhawks' most frustrating regular-season losses.

After Lummi, ranked third among the state's Class 1B eight-man teams, scored on its first four possessions against second-ranked Neah Bay, the unbeaten Red Devils shut out the Blackhawks in the second half.

Neah Bay (5-0 overall, 1-0 Northwest Football League) needed nearly three hours to claim a 48-28 victory while limiting Lummi (3-2, 0-1) to 59 total yards in the second half after the Blackhawks amassed 293 first-half yards before one of the largest crowds in the school's history Friday, Sept. 29.

The Red Devils' running game produced 314 yards on 53 rushes, limiting Lummi's offensive opportunities, especially in the second half.

Senior quarterback Jared Tom threw touchdown passes of 48 and 24 yards to senior running back Dimitri Sampson for Lummi's first two scores. On the Blackhawks' next two drives, Sampson scored on a 7-yard run and Deion Hoskins tallied on a tackle-breaking 4-yard burst, giving Lummi a 28-22 lead.

But Neah Bay also scored on its first four possessions, claiming a 28-all tie at halftime thanks to Joey Monje's 80-yard touchdown sprint with 5:59 remaining in a wild first half, which produced a combined 575 yards by both teams.

But it was all Neah Bay in the second half as senior quarterback Josiah Greene scored on a 23-yard run to break the tie and then threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Zeke Greene for a 42-28 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter not long after Lummi lost a fumble.

The most frustrating aspect of the night came on Lummi's first play after Zeke Greene's touchdown catch. The officials ruled Tom lost a fumble, while Lummi's coaches protested in vain that the play was actually a shovel pass and should have been ruled incomplete.

Neah Bay did not score on its next series, but the Red Devils used up enough time to move the clock down to just over eight minutes before they gave up the ball to Lummi. The Blackhawks were quickly victimized by a 32-yard interception return by Tyler McCaulley, setting up a game-clinching 1-yard touchdown by Cody Cummins with 8:10 remaining.

Until Lummi's loss to the Red Devils in last year's state quarterfinals, the Blackhawks had beaten their rivals 10 of the previous 12 games. Now, with two losses in a row, it's back to a whole lot of hard work to maintain their state hopes this season.

To add even more frustration for Lummi, the Blackhawks blocked a punt at the Neah Bay 1-yard line with seven seconds remaining to play. Lummi's bid to end the second-half shutout was denied at the gun.

Josiah Greene wound up with three touchdowns, Cummins with two and Zeke Greene and Monje with one each as the Red Devils amassed 439 total yards on 65 plays, including 100 yards on 19 rushes by Cummins, 104 on 11 carries by Monje and 89 on 15 rushes by quarterback Josiah Greene.

With Lummi counting regularly on a quick-strike offense, those 65 plays took up too much time for the Blackhawks to overcome.

Hoskins led Lummi with 78 yards on 7 rushes, but 51 came on the play that set up Sampson's 7-yard scoring run late in the first quarter - Lummi's third touchdown of the opening period. Few could have guessed the Blackhawks would be held to one score over the final three periods and no points in the second half.
