Lexi McKinnon scored a hat trick for the Meridian girls' soccer team as it defeated Friday Harbor 5-0 in a non-conference game on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Meridian.
Taylor Lunde scored first for the Trojans in the 56th minute and then assisted on all of McKinnon's goals. Haley Belanger scored the final goal in the last minute of the game.
"We had more shots in the first half," Meridian coach Andrea Ames said in a phone interview. "It was just one of those games where they had me worried for a little bit. If you can't finish and you could let a team back into the game and it could all go wrong. Once we got that first goal the floodgates opened and it was like they remembered, 'Oh yea, we can score a lot of goals.'"
Meridian outshot Friday Harbor 19-2, leaving little for Abbi Rautenberg to do as goalie for the Trojans.
"Trinell Carpenter had a dynamite game for us," Ames said "She steps to the ball so well and plays her heart out every game."
Meridian improved to 6-2-1, 3-2-0 NWC and will play at Blaine on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
