Bellingham forum Sept. 29 offers pros and cons of state ballot issues

Published: September 24, 2012

Voters who would like to learn more about legalizing marijuana, charter schools and other statewide issues on the November ballot can hear pros and cons about several measures at a forum Saturday, Sept. 29.

The forum will be presented by the League of Women Voters of Bellingham/Whatcom County and will run from 10 a.m. to noon in Bellingham City Council chambers at City Hall, 210 Lottie St. Speakers will discuss four ballot measures:

• Initiative 1185, which would require that any bill to increase taxes be approved by a two-thirds vote in the Legislature or else be approved by voters.

• Initiative 502, which would license and regulate marijuana production, distribution and possession for people over 21.

• Initiative 1240, which would lift the ban on charter schools in the state and authorize up to 40 publicly funded charter schools open to all students in the next five years.

• Referendum 74, which would confirm or reject the bill passed by the Legislature allowing same-sex marriage.

The forum will be rebroadcast on BTV 10 and will be available on the city's website at cob.org.

The event is the first of four local League of Women Voters' forums on issues and candidates on the Nov. 6 ballot.
