BELLINGHAM - A free all-ages celebration of Arbor Day is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, among the trees of Elizabeth Park.
The event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes a 10:30 a.m. guided tree walk around the park with city arborist James Luce and local tree expert John Wesselink.
Tree climbing for kids, under the guidance of professional climbers, will begin at 12:30 p.m. Kids will be allowed to climb a selected tree in the park; helmet, harness and rope will be provided, but kids who have a bicycle helmet that fits are asked to bring that. A parent must be present to sign the liability release form.
Other actitivities include Ask the Arborist (bring your tree questions), knot tying instruction and demonstrations, hands-on educational kids activities and information on tree planting. The event is sponsored by Bellingham Parks & Recreation and Tree Keepers.
