LYNDEN -The Lynden Christian football team defeated Anacortes 21-14 in a close Northwest Conference game filled with penalties, turnovers and long offensive drives on Friday, Sept. 21.
The Lyncs were led to victory by sophomore quarterback Daulton Hommes in a fourth quarter drive. Hommes completed three straight passes to march the Lyncs to the 1-yard line where senior Will Scholten punched the ball in for the final come-from-behind touchdown.
"Daulton is really good under pressure, he made some smart throws," Scholten said.
Hommes came into the game in the fourth quarter after starting quarterback Isaac Reimer came off the field with an injury. After a rough first series where he threw an interception, Hommes came back out composed and led Lynden Christian to the win.
Hommes finished with 62 passing yards, completing seven of his 12 attempted passes. Reimer also threw the ball 12 times, completing six passes and totaling 74 yards.
Anacortes gained the lead by using an 11-minute drive at the start of the third quarter to score and go up by one point. Sophomore Anthony Cook and junior Nick Monroe ran the ball downfield and helped use up most of the time in third quarter.
"We couldn't seem to get a stop on that drive," Lyncs coach Galen Kaemingk said.
Cook finished with 112 rushing yards on 22 touches and Monroe added 97 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Senior Rich Postera added another 15 yards and five attempts.
Anacortes was done in by penalties with 13 total for the game. The Seahawks managed to stay close thanks to five turnovers by Lynden Christian.
"We had way too many turnovers," said Kaemingk. "We ended up getting a good call that went our way."
