Yeager's goes undefeated at own senior softball tournament in Ferndale

Several senior softball teams from Washington and British Columbia competed in the Yeager's 2012 Invitational last weekend in Ferndale.

Division winners were: 50 and over, NW Legends (Seattle); 50 and over, Sea Dogs (Seattle); 60 and over, Yeager's (Bellingham); 55 and over, Jim's Auto (Federal Way); 60 and over, Astromail (Tacoma); 50 and over, Global (B.C.); and 65 and over, Silver Sity Brewers (Silverdale).

Yeager's won its division with a record of 5-0. Leading Yeager's were Rick Anderson (.875 average), Jim Norris (.842), Wayne Williams (.824), Terry Munday (.750) and Dave Hare (.706). Norris hit two home runs and Jon Cox hit a home run for Yeager's.

Teams ranged in age from over 50 to over 70 years old.

WINNERS FOR LOCAL NFL PUNT, PASS & KICK COMPETITION

Nearly 50 participants took part in the Whatcom County NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition held in late August at Civic Stadium.

Here are the first-place honors for each age group:

Girls: age 6-7, Caitlyn Richardson; 8-9, Grace Schroder; 10-11, Cassandra Abitia; 12-13, Emma Schroder;

Boys: 6-7, Thomas Boyle; 8-9, Aiden Weston; 10-11, Isaac Poole; 12-13, Nathaniel Poole; 14-15, Clark Hazlett.

The local winners advance to the sectional competition held later this fall.

NW WASHINGTON HORSE EXPO NEXT MONTH

The NW Washington Horse Expo will be Oct. 5-7 in Lynden at the Northwest Washington Fair and Event Center.

The event will offer a variety of activities for horse lovers. The Extreme Cowboy Race will be presented each day. Instructors Craig Cameron, Greg Best and Raye Lochert will lead clinics on riding, training and caring for horses. Different breeds of horses will be highlighted each day and participate in the All the Beautiful Horses Breed Parade at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.

Other highlights inlcude cowboy campfire music and poetry, vendors displaying a variety of horse-related products, different breeds of horses and a cowboy church service on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Tickets purchased at least one day in advance are $10 for adults and $8 for youths and seniors. Tickets at the gate are $12 for adults and $10 for youths and seniors. Three-day passes are $30 for adults and $24 for youths and seniors.

STRAY FINISHES 16TH AT MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Kevin Stray of Bellingham finished in a tie for 16th place at the Pacific Northwest Men's Mid-Amateur Championship on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Stray shot a three-round total of 84-72-75-231 to finish 13 shots back from winner Tom Brandes of Bellevue (218 total).

LAKE PADDEN MEN'S CLUB RESULTS

Here are the results of the Lake Padden's Men Club two-man scramble on Sept. 15:

First Division - First gross: James Fox, Shane Clarke, 147; first net: Dean Carpenter/Gary Bring, 134.

Second Division - First gross: Ron Fuller/Kevin Granger-Brown, 151; first net: Terry Brayton/Steve Epperson, 129.

Third Division - First gross: Jack Sanford/Doug Yarwood, 164; First net: Jerry Lilleston/Mike Sparling, 131.

INDOOR GOLF LEAGUE TOURNAMENT

The Indoor Golf League Kickoff Tournament will be Saturday, Oct. 6, at Joe's Professional Golf Lab & Indoor Golf Center.

The tournament will feature an 11 a.m. shotgun start, field limited to the first 48 entries, at the Birch Bay Village Golf Course, 18 holes stroke play, individual and two-person team best ball, and a $30 entry fee ($10 for Birch Bay Village members).

The Indoor Golf League will begin the week of Oct. 15.

UBA BELLINGHAM AAU TRYOUTS

The UBA Bellingham youth AAU basketball teams will be having tryouts over the next couple weeks

Boys in grades five and six will have tryouts at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at WWU's Carver Gym and 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Bellingham High School.

Boys grades seven and eight will have tryouts at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30, at Carver Gym and 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Bellingham High School.

Girls in grades five and seven will have tryouts at 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 23, at Carver Gym and 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Fairhaven Middle School.

MARINERS AAU TRYOUTS

The sixth-grade boys' Mariners AAU basketball tryouts will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 26-27 at Fairhaven Middle School East Gym.

The seventh-grade tryouts will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 3-4 at Fairhaven Middle School East Gym.

Also, coaches are needed for the fifth- and eighth-grade levels.

LAKE PADDEN TRAIL HALF SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The Lake Padden Trail Half marathon is searching for 50-plus volunteers for its race on Oct. 20.

The event needs volunteers before, during and after the race, which includes marketing, preparing raceer packets, photography, race timing, help at each leg and takedown. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, a rafflle entry and lunch.

HOLE-IN-ONE

David York had a hole-in-one on Sept. 6 at Shuksan Golf Club. York used a pitching wedge on the 118-yard No. 11 hole.
