"American Quilts: The Democratic Art," opens Saturday, Aug. 4, and shows through Oct. 28 at Whatcom Museum’s Lightcatcher.

"AMERICAN QUILTS: THE DEMOCRATIC ART, 1780-2007"

Organized especially for Whatcom Museum, "American Quilts: The Democratic Art" is one of the first exhibitions to tell the story of American quilts and quilt makers, providing a visually compelling, study of the art, history and cultural importance of American quilts, from their European origins to the present day.

Based on Robert Shaw's 2009 book "American Quilts: The Democratic Art 1780-2007," the exhibition offers an array of 30 quilt masterpieces that span the history of American quilt-making. The exhibit runs through Oct. 28 at Whatcom Museum's Lightcatcher, 250 Flora St.

CLOUD MOUNTAIN FARM CENTER ANNUAL FALL FRUIT FESTIVAL

An annual event the past 22 years, Cloud Mountain Farm Center offers samples from its 200 varieties of common and uncommon Northwest fruits, ciders and nuts, plus rare fruit jellies and sauces, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 7 at the farm, 6906 Goodwin Road, near Everson.

Live music provides a pleasant background for the event, which also features U-pick and we-pick pumpkins and gourds. Admission: $3.50 per person, $9 per carload.

WHATCOM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GOES HOLLYWOOD

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2012-2013 season with a salute to Hollywood that features songs from 100 years of movie music at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.

The program includes music made famous by Charlie Chaplin and "Harry Potter" movies, and a tribute to John Williams, with music from "E.T.", "Superman," "Schindler's List" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," arranged and conducted by Bellingham's Ken Harrison.

Maestro Roupen Shakarian, who has agreed to step in while the orchestra searches for a new music director, will also conduct music from "The Lone Ranger," "Apocalypse Now," "Fantasia" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." Tickets: $12, $34 and $39, and people can bring a teen for free.

GARY WRIGHT AND AL STEWART SHARE STAGE

Gary Wright and Al Stewart, touring together for the first time, rock the stage at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Pavilion at the Silver Reef Hotel Casino Spa, 4876 Haxton Way, near Ferndale.

The duo will performing their Top 40 Hits "Dream Weaver," "Love is Alive" and "Really Wanna Know You" "Year of the Cat," "Time Passage" and "On the Border." Tickets: $29.50. Details: 866-383-0777.

QUE SERA! CELEBRATING DORIS DAY

Celebrating Doris Day, renowned vocalist Kristi King, wearing platinum wigs and gorgeous gowns, brings the film star to life at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Mount Baker Theatre's Walton Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St.

King relates Day's stories and sings her greatest hits, including "Que Será, Será," "It's Magic," "Everybody Loves a Lover," "A Guy Is a Guy, "Secret Love" and more - 22 in all.

Accompanied by the Hans Brehmer Quartet, King uses arrangements based on the original recordings. Tickets: $24.
