ARLINGTON - The Blaine football team lost a heartbreaker against Lakewood 22-20 in a non-conference game on Friday, Sept. 14, in Lakewood.
After falling down 15-0 in the first half, Blaine made a fourth quarter comeback to come within two with no time left on the clock.
Blaine went to its most trusted back, Mario Gobbato, with the two-point attempt and was stopped that gave the Cougars the win.
"I liked the way we kept fighting," Blaine coach Jay Dodd said. "We lost on one last play and sometimes that's football."
Gobbato had 206 yards on 40 carries with two touchdowns for the Borderites, and 69 yards on the last drive.
"Our offensive line was getting great push," Gobbato said. "They did a great job of opening holes for us."
Gobbato also had two fumbles in the first half.
"We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half," Gobbato said. "I had two fumbles personally, but we showed some heart coming back. Our seniors need to step up next game and not let us have that kind of a first half again."
Lakewood was led by Justin Peterson who had 43 yards rushing with a touchdown, 30 yards receiving and went 7 for 11 throwing for 100 yards and a touchdown, all while handling punt duty.
Blaine falls to 2-1, 0-0 NWC and will play at Bellingham on Friday, Sept. 21.
