Trooper: Acme pickup driver reading text crashes head-on into car

Published: September 14, 2012

A pickup driver from Acme was arrested Friday morning, Sept. 14, after he crossed the center line while reading a text message and crashed into a Honda Civic, seriously injuring the other driver, according to Washington State Patrol.

Jeff Hruby, 39, was driving his 2005 Dodge Dakota west at 8 a.m. in the 21000 block of Parson Creek Road in Skagit County when he looked down at his phone to read a text, said Trooper Keith Leary.

The Dakota crossed the center line and smashed head-on into an oncoming 1992 Honda Civic.

Both vehicles were totaled.

The Civic driver - Tomas Fulton, 39, of Sedro-Woolley - was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital. At 11:30 a.m., he was transported by ground to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Hruby was treated at the scene, then booked into Skagit County Jail on investigation of vehicular assault.

The speed limit on that stretch of road is 35 mph. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be involved.

Leary wasn't sure about the contents of the text or who sent it to Hruby.
