No doubt influenced by a Week 1 loss to Class 1A King's, the defending 2A champion Lynden football team opened the 2012 Washington State Associated Press Football Poll ranked fifth.
The poll, which is voted on by a statewide panel of sports editors and writers, was released late Wednesday, Sept. 12.
Archbishop Murphy, the team Lynden beat in the 2A title game last year, earned the top spot in the classification with three first-place votes, while Capital was second but received six first-place votes. Lynden received the other top vote. Burlington-Edison also made the 2A poll, checking in at eighth.
The Lions (1-1) will host Mount Baker (2-0) this week.
Blaine was the only Whatcom County team to make the top 10 in Class 1A, as the Borderites were ranked fourth behind top-ranked King's. Mount Baker just missed the top 10. Blaine (2-0) this week will travel to Lakewood, which is ranked No. 7 in the 2A poll.
Lummi, which is coming off an 11-man loss to La Conner last week, received two first-place votes and opened the 1B poll in fourth behind top-ranked Neah Bay. The Blackhawks (1-1) host Taholah this week.
Skyline and Bellevue were unanimous top picks in 4A and 3A, respectively, while Morton White Pass edged Waitsburg-Prescott for No. 1 in 2B.
