Ferndale man injured after tipping semi on I-5 near Custer

Published: September 13, 2012

A Ferndale man was injured early Thursday morning, Sept. 13, when he crashed his semi into an abandoned car on the side of Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Robert E. Barrow, 73, was heading south on I-5 at about 12:30 a.m. at the Birch Bay-Lynden Road exit when the semi hit a 2000 Jeep Wrangler that was abandoned on the right shoulder.

The semi was hauling two trailers full of gravel. After striking the Jeep, the cab and the trailers tipped, landing on their sides on the right shoulder.

Barrow was taken to St. Joseph hospital, where he was in satisfactory condition Thursday morning. Both vehicles were totaled.

The road was at least partially blocked for several hours as crews cleaned up after the crash.

Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash and what charges may result.
