The Sehome boys' tennis team dropped its first match of the season but was still strong enough to defeat Squalicum 6-1 in Northwest Conference action Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Squalicum.
The Mariners, who won their previous two matches by scores of 7-0, improved to 3-0, 3-0 NWC while the Storm dropped to 0-2, 0-3 NWC.
"Sehome's a real strong team and they played well," Squalicum coach Joe O'Brien said in a phone interview.
Avery West, Nick Smith, Brady Anderson and Johan Lahud-Zahner won in singles for Sehome. The Mariners had doubles wins from Andrew Bruce/Jason Newell at No. 1 and Jake Albert/Evan Miksovsky at No. 3 (by forfeit).
Squalicum's win came at No. 2 doubles when Drew Segren and Kevin Smiley came from behind to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Segren is a sophomore while Smiley is a freshman.
"They played well together and came back after that first set" O'Brien said.
Sehome hosts Burlington-Edison on Friday, Sept. 14, while Squalicum hosts Anacortes on Friday, Sept. 14.
