Weihe qualifies for USGA Senior Amateur Championship

Rick Weihe of Bellingham finished second at a USGA Senior Amateur Championship Qualifier on Thursday, Sept. 6, to earn a spot in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Weihe shot a 39-36-75 to finish in second place, two strokse behind Jim McNelis of Gig Harbor, at the Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle. Weihe also qualified for the USGA Senior Amateur Championship in 2004 when he made the round of 32.

Other golfers from Bellingham who played in the qualifer were Fred Urquhart (42-41-83), Gary Caplin (41-43-84) and William Hager (40-46-86).

The USGA Senior Amateur Championship will be held at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J., from Sept. 29 to Oct. 4.

BREWERS WIN BORDERLINE BASEBALL LEAGUE

The Brewers defeated the Mudcats in the adult Borderline Baseball League last week.

Daniel Vander Kooi helped lead the Brewers out of the loser's bracket to the league title. Sam Larson was 6 for 8 and Travis Brewer was 5 for 9 while Colin Kelley and Rich Larson picked up the victories for the Brewers.

The Mudcats were led by Steve Chapman.

D-BLOCK HOOPS TRYOUTS

The D-Block Hoops program will have tryouts for fifth-grade boys at Whatcom Middle School. The tryouts will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 13.

The tryouts for the eighth-grade boys also will be at Whatcom Middle School. Tryouts will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 13.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Sookhee Byum had a hole-in-one at Lake Padden Golf Course on Aug. 21. Byum used a 5-iron on the No. 4 hole.
