Lynden takes fifth place at Mariner Tournament

The Lynden volleyball team placed fifth at the 16-team Mariner Tournament Saturday, Sept. 8, at Mariner High School in Everett.

The Lions advanced to the gold division after finishing in the top half of thier pool, which consisted of Yelm, Skyline and Cedarcrest.

Lynden lost to Kent-Meridian in the first round of gold division play, but coach Angie Dallas was pleased with her team's overall performance.

"I'd say we played great defense as a whole," Dallas said in a phone interview. "Taylor VanDalen did a great job setting, and it was Brooke Bonsen and Maddi Hommes on the offensive side."

Blaine also competed in the tournament. The Borderites advanced to the silver division and lost to their first round opponent.

"I thought Kayla Ubil did a great job today," Blaine coach Sheli Moore said in a phone interview. "She had the hustle. Also, Kirstin Larson did a great job in the middle for us."

Lynden's next match is against city-rival Lynden Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Lynden. Blaine's next match is against Meridian at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Meridian.
