Kim Dorr, Leigha Schjelderup and Lizzy Herda each scored goals for the Squalicum girls' soccer team, as the Storm beat Ferndale 3-0 in a nonconference matchup Saturday, Sept. 8, at Northwest Soccer Fields in Bellingham.
"First of all, I have to say that Squalicum played really well today," Ferndale coach Joe Gonzalez said in a phone interview. "I think they are the best team in the league this year. We played hard out there and wanted to contain their style of play."
Dorr scored first with a goal in the 30th minute, and Schjelderup put the Storm up 2-0 with a goal in the 55th minute. Herda finished off the Golden Eagles with her 70th-minute score.
"I thought we controlled the game really well," Squalicum coach David Kish said in a phone interview. "I was really proud of my two goalies and my defensive line for getting a shutout."
Gonzalez praised the play of Ferndale midfielder Tina Slaughter, saying she was the "player of the game" for the Golden Eagles.
Ferndale faces Anacortes in its Northwest Conference opener at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Anacortes. Squalicum begins conference play against Burlington-Edison at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Civic Stadium.
