Forward Justin Moore scored his second goal in three games this season midway through the first half and the defense made it stand up as Western Washington University defeated Hawaii Pacific on Friday, Sept. 7, at Whatcom Community College.
It was the first win for the 1-2-0 Vikings, who opened a four-game home stand. HPU lost for the second time in as many outings.
Moore, who has been a defender for the Vikings in each of the last two seasons, scored in the 25th minute as he volleyed in a loose ball. It was the second game-winning goal of his four-year career. He did not score as junior after finding the net twice as a freshman and once as a sophomore.
It was the first shutout of the season for WWU and the first of sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Rogers' collegiate career. Rogers made three saves and the Vikings had six stops overall.
