The Sehome girls' cross country team finished first in its season-opening meet Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Sehome High School. The team was led by Emily Pittis with a time of 11 minutes, 37 seconds.
"Emily ran a smart race and we were really happy," Sehome coach Kevin Ryan said in a phone interview. "She sat back early and ran a strong second half and really finished strong. We had a lot of girls race well today."
Squalicum had seven freshmen finish in the top 20 in their first race.
Meridian freshman Mimi Megisson finished second with a time of 12:02, and Sehome freshman Rebekah Oviatt finished third at 12:11.
"Seeing Rebekah fly at the end was really exciting," Ryan said. "It was a good overall team effort. They were tired and to see them finish well was exciting."
Meridian finished second with 47 points and Sedro-Woolley finished third with 71.
"They are all still adjusting to school and to see them run well was a lot of fun," Ryan said.
