Red Raider's fall 3-2 to Marysville-Getchell in season opener

Published: September 5, 2012

The Bellingham girls' soccer team fought back from a 3-0 defecit in its season opener, but it wasn't enough as the Red Raiders fell 3-2 to Marysville-Getchell in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Marysville.

Marysville-Getchell scored all three of its goals in the first nine minutes.

"We were a little bit overwhelmed with the speed and technicality and they were running a formation we weren't familiar with," Bellingham coach Mark Wright said in a phone interview. "The game was coming really fast for our midfield, but when we settled down we got into the game."

Larkyn Nelson chipped the ball past the Marysville-Getchell keeper in the 67th minute for a goal to bring the Red Raiders within one.

"She saw the keeper come out and played a ball long over her head," Wright said. "She almost did the same thing again two minutes later, but hit the post."

Brooke Baker scored Bellingham's first goal in the 17th minute off a pass from Mary Dearland.

"I was proud of how the team responded to the early pressure and kept fighting," Wright said.

Bellingham goalie Anna Jacobus had 12 saves.

The Red Raiders play at Ferndale on Thursday, Sept. 6.
