Prep volleyball preview: Lynden Christian Lyncs

Published: September 3, 2012

LYNDEN CHRISTIAN

LYNCS

Coach: Kim Grycel

Last year: Finished first in the Class 1A Northwest Conference standings with a league record of 10-3. ... Ended season after going 2-2 in the Class 1A State Tournament, placing sixth in state. ... Finished 17-7 overall. ... Jasmine Hommes was selected All-Whatcom County Player of the Year, and Brielle VanZonneveld was an All-Whatcom County selection.

Players to watch: Kayla Tiemersma (sr., MH); Bridget Kruk (sr., DS); Karley De Jager (jr., OH); Cassie Mulder (sr., OH)

Outlook: The loss of seven seniors traditionally doesn't bode well for the next year, but don't count Kim Grycel's Lyncs out. A Class 1A State Tournament without LC present doesn't happen very often. Gone is two-time All-Whatcom County Player of the Year Jasmine Hommes, so is 6-foot-3 Brielle VanZonneveld. "I'm going to say young and talented," said Grycel in a phone interview when asked to describe her team. "I'm excited. They show a lot of enthusiasm." LC does, for the most part, return the height it had last year. Grycel said she has five players between 5-11 and 6-1. One of those is senior outside hitter Cassie Mulder, who Grycel said has made huge strides in improving her game during the offseason. Kayla Tiemersma adds more height and provides a strong presence in the middle. Karley DeJager and Madison Weg are two others Grycel is looking towards to play important roles.
