Girls' soccer preview: Squalicum Storm

SQUALICUM

STORM

Coach: David Kish

Last Year: Finished tied for second in the Class 2A Northwest Conference standings with a league record 8-2-3. ... Ended season after going 1-2 in the Class 2A District Tournament and finished 11-5-3 overall. David Kish was selected All-Whatcom County Coach of the Year, and Andrea DeVere, Kayla Erickson and Kylie Garrison were All-Whatcom County selections.

Players to watch: Lauren Wallace (sr., D); Andrea DeVere (sr., M); Julia DeVere (so., M); Lauren Eckert (jr., GK)

Outlook: Squalicum is not short on experience. Coach David Kish has 12 returners who logged varsity minutes last season. The majority of those, however, are defenders or midfielders. Junior keeper Lauren Eckert will be in goal for her third season. Veterans Lauren Wallace and Andrea DeVere headline a strong defense, and Julia DeVere, Lauren Gibb and Zoe Peterson give the Storm a talented group in the middle third. Kish's one dilemma is who will fill the scoring void left by Kylie Garrison's departure. Sarah Byron and Gracie Slater seem like potential candidates, but Kish thinks a number of players will contribute. "The girls we have that have been here for four years, every year their goal has been to go to state," Kish said in a phone interview. "It's been this team's number one goal since we had the heart-breaking loss to Lakewood to get (to state). The girls are very determined to get there."
